IVDD in Dachshunds and Beagles

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae degenerate, bulge or burst. This compresses the spinal chord and causes symptoms such as back pain, wobbling and paralysis.  Most people are aware this is an issue in Dachshunds but it can affect other breeds including Beagles.  Chrondrodystrophic dogs are those breeds which have short legs and dwarfism characteristics. When DNA testing both Dachshunds and Beagles, almost all dogs will test as "At Risk" for IVDD.  Keep in mind that "At Risk" does not necessarily mean the dog will develop or be affected by a condition.   Since IVDD is directly related to the structure of the Dachshund and the Beagle, we cannot guarantee our dogs against this condition.  Please educate yourself about IVDD and what you as a pet owner can do to reduce the chances of your pet being affected.
